The Catawba Clergy Network (CCN) is a resource center for United Church of Christ, Catawba College alumni, and area clergy who want to thrive in their ministries. CCN is a hub for communication, cohorts, and other gathering opportunities so that ministers can rest, reflect and meaningfully connect with other clergy. CCN also offers clergy needed financial support to enhance their ministries.

Creating a Space for Continuing Education and Growth
Catawba alumni and UCC ministers gathered for the first annual Catawba Clergy Days at Catawba College in 2019. As one participant stated, "It was a time to think and dream and pray and learn all at the same time."

It is exactly our hope that the Catawba Clergy Network creates such space: in an ongoing manner through Communities of Practice, and also through gathering opportunities like our recent Catawba Clergy Days. The gatherings are full of positive energy and excitement, as well as lively conversations and a community feeling. In the past, ministers have gathered from the Western NC Association, Eastern NC Association, the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference, as well as various other denominations represented by Catawba alumni and friends of the college.

Those in attendance share meals, coffee, conversation, and hear speakers present on health ministry, sanctuary, Biblical storytelling, prayerful art journaling, and a crowd favorite - Youth Empowered Solutions.

The Catawba Clergy Network is excited to offer UCC pastors in the Southern Conference, Catawba College alumni, and area ministers financial resources and opportunities for personal and professional growth through its “Thriving in Ministry” initiative funded by the Lilly Endowment. By joining a Clergy Community of Practice (COP)* you can gain invaluable peer learning and support, as well as get grant funding to help you and your churches thrive.

Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly - a group of your peers who gather monthly for conversation, learning and support. Often, we have participated in communities of practice without realizing it. For example, whenever a group forms to work together on similar concerns, explore new ways of approaching their work and help each other navigate the many challenges they face, it is a community of practice.

A “clergy” community of practice (“clergy COP”) is a small group of ministers intentionally focused on how to do ministry better and thrive as pastors. Clergy COPs focus both on self-care and the support and wisdom we can gain from regular gatherings with experienced peers who offer new perspectives and resources. All clergy COPs are self-directed (focused on the needs and interests of participants) and convened by trained facilitators who help assure the groups run smoothly and effectively.

Clergy COPs can be life-giving and vital to your personal and professional development. Many pastors say that being in a learning and support group, such as a clergy COP, saved them in ministry. Without such networking and support, they would not have survived as ministers. Hundreds of UCC and other pastors across our country are enhancing their personal wellbeing and leadership skills by participating in COPs. We hope you will take advantage of this invaluable opportunity to grow together - personally and professionally. Investing in your self-care and leadership development will yield dividends for your churches.

Three necessary and interacting dimensions of clergy COPs:

THE FOCUS IS MINISTRY: A clergy COP is a group of active, licensed and authorized ministers dedicated to their ongoing self-care and professional development.
THE COMMUNITY IS ESSENTIAL: When clergy come together for discussion, they build supportive relationships, share successes and challenges, and learn relevant information to improve their ministries. They care for, encourage and strengthen one another. Over time, trust develops in this confidential setting, and members feel blessed to be able to share their expertise and deepest questions, as well as their uncertainties.
KNOWLEDGE IS PRACTICE-BASED: Knowledge within a COP is developed and tested through actual practice and refined into common wisdom. Skills develop within the group as members craft practices to address common issues and their growing edges in ministry.

“FIVE CS” THAT UNDERGIRD OUR COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE:

Community: COPs are made up of 5-8 pastors who meet monthly, face-to-face or virtually for nine months to one year. Each group is self-directed, with participants coordinating with the facilitator to choose topics of their interest.
Competency: COPs are convened and supervised by trained facilitators who help assure that groups run smoothly and effectively.
Covenant: Each COP develops a covenant guiding participation in the group. And each group member covenants to be present and engaged at each meeting, unless facing unavoidable emergency. Each voice is needed and appreciated.
Confidentiality: In COPs, confidential information is to be held in confidence so that members feel safe and share freely. Trust is foundational to the success of the group.
Cost Sharing: Clergy pay a small fee up front to participate in a COP. NOTE: this year, as an incentive for you to “taste and see” how good participating in a COP can be for your self-care and the health of your ministry, if you participate fully, the Catawba Clergy Network (CCN) will refund your initial fee and provide you additional monies for a self-selected thriving initiative for your health, growth and wellbeing. Grant projects and plans must be approved by CCN.

REFUNDABLE MEMBERSHIP FEE

The COP fee is refundable at the end of the program year, conditioned upon meaningful participation in the CCN Clergy Community of Practice. The fee is due by 2nd meeting.

*The Pastoral Excellence Network adopted the term “communities of practice” from Etienne Wenger, an educational theorist and practitioner.

Gathering Spaces are opportunities for continuing education, networking, and retreating. For example, watch for our “Catawba Clergy Days,” in conjunction with Homecoming, when we bring students together with local and alumni clergy who share their wisdom, and Mental Health First Aid training coming this winter. Additional educational, gathering, and retreat opportunities for ministers will be an ongoing piece of the Catawba Clergy Network.

The CCN Discussion Hub is an online community providing and welcoming resources, questions and comments that help ministers thrive. All ministers and those interested in ministry are welcome to the conversation, which we hope will be robust. Join the conversation and share your wisdom and questions.

FAQs

What grants are available through the Catawba Clergy Network (CCN)?
CCN offers two types of grants:

Clergy Thriving Grants: Clergy Thriving Grants are competitive grants offered once a year and open to any member of the Catawba Clergy Network who applies by the application deadline. These grants are up to $2,500.
COP Grants: Communities of Practice grants (COP grants) are available to Clergy who have successfully completed a COP year. These are $500 grants to support Clergy Thriving.

When is the deadline to apply for a Clergy Thriving Grant?
May 15

Do I need to be a member of the Catawba Clergy Network to apply for a Clergy Thriving Grant?
Yes. Become a member by submitting the Clergy Network membership form.

Do I have to be a UCC Minister, Catawba Alumnus, or both to apply?
No. Ministers who have joined the Catawba Clergy Network but don’t fall into these categories (such as Salisbury area ministers or members of an interdenominational COP) are invited to apply. However, priority for Clergy Thriving grants is given to UCC ministers in the Southern Conference, clergy participating in COPs, as well as to Catawba alumni in ministry anywhere in the United States. 

How much money can I ask for?
The maximum Clergy Thriving grant is $2500.  Please only apply for resources that you need and can justify.

What is the grant period?
Each grant is a one-year grant and must be used within one year of receipt of funding.  Projects under each grant offered by CCN must be administered in accordance with your individual grant application. For extensions on your grant period, please contact Shannon Axtell Martin.

What report do I need to complete after the grant period?
View the grant report questions. Please keep notes and receipts related to your grant project. And, when you can throughout the year, take pictures of your activities. Then, at the end of the year, you will be prepared to report on your budget expenditures and provide written reflection on grant activities and results.

How often can I apply for a Clergy Thriving Grant?
Annually.  If you have already received a CCN grant, priority will be given to applicants who have not received funding. Note, however, you may apply for both a COP Grant and a Clergy Thriving Grant within the same year.

How long does it take to receive funding once I apply?
Grant decisions will be made by June 15, with the goal of dispersing funding within thirty days of decisions.

How long does it take to receive funding once I apply?
The deadline to apply is July 15th. Our goal is to disperse funding by the end of August.
